In 2008 more than a third of those who had entered the formal school system failed to matriculate. Five years later a respected report found that one in three teachers was underqualified to teach science and mathematics. At the same time, almost a third of university students were dropping out of their undergraduate studies.
University enrolments were rising but far too many high school leavers were underprepared in terms of knowledge and language skills, lacking the psychosocial skills needed to transition from school to university or college.
Something was wrong. In 2008 we set out to help fix those troubling “one-thirds” in our education system.
